While Certina does have a decent range of mechanical offering, they mostly use the run-of-the-mill ETA 2824 variants. While Hamilton has the Field Khaki and Tissot has the Vissodate, Certina really doesn't have a design with comparable iconic status.įor us watch nerds, Swiss-made mechanical movements are all the rage. Certina has nowhere near the name recognition of its Swatch Group siblings Hamilton and Tissot. For people who don't really care about horology and just want a good fashion accessory, they want something with a brand that is recognisable and a design that is iconic. The real divers would wear a diving computer and the real rough and ready men wear G Shocks, for instance.įinally, the term 'Swiss made'. If your watch is an essential tool for whatever activity you're doing, there is always a more appropriate alternative to Certinas. The 'DS' system is amazing, for the 1960s. Yes their 'precidrive' movement is nice, but it really pales by comparison to the offerings from Citizen and Seiko, which has radio-controlled movements linked to an atomic clock and they come around the same price as most Certinas. Their main selling points are precision, robustness, and being Swiss, but does none of them particularly well. Having said that, I think the problem with Certina, apart from having minuscule marketing budget, is that they don't really make sense to most people. I have no doubt that Certina is under appreciated, which is a shame because they have some really nice offering but completely shadowed by its bigger siblings of the Swatch Group. /r/WatchExchange for buying, selling, trading watchesīanner photo courtesy of /u/northscylla Please take a look at our community rules and FAQ before contributing!./r/WatchHorology our sister subreddit for horology, watch appreciation, history, technical discussion and related topics.Simple Questions and Recommendations ThreadĬome hang out in the Official /r/Watches Discord!
